About the Speaker
Barbara Benson, a national consultant on standards and assessment, has taught in public schools and universities for over twenty-five years. As a public school teacher, she won local and state recognition for her innovative work with student portfolios, performance assessment, and service learning. At Appalachian State University, she taught education, English, and interdisciplinary studies, and supervised student teachers. Barbara has presented at National Staff Development Council and ASCD conferences. She has also written articles on classroom practice, co-authored STUDENT-LED CONFERENCES USING SHOWCASE PORTFOLIOS (Corwin Press, 1999), and authored HOW TO MEET STANDARDS, MOTIVATE STUDENTS AND STILL ENJOY TEACHING (Corwin Press, 2003). Her professional development sessions are always practical, supplying ideas to be used immediately as well as the theoretical basis needed for long-range planning. She is presently providing consultant support for school districts in New York, Texas, Illinois, North Carolina, and Tennessee as they align classroom practice to new standards and assessments.
