About the Speaker
Rick Smith is an award-winning teacher, education consultant, and international presenter. He has given numerous keynotes, pre-conference, and concurrent sessions at state and national conferences throughout the United States. He is the author of Conscious Classroom Management: Unlocking the Secrets of Great Teaching (Corwin Press, 2004). Currently, Smith teaches part-time in the elementary credential program at St. Mary’s College and mentors beginning teachers. Smith taught students for more than fifteen years, with a primary focus on students at-risk, and was a mentor/support provider and mentor coordinator for seven years. He has taught in the secondary credential program at Dominican College and has trained American Peace Corps volunteer teachers in Ghana, West Africa. Smith’s Masters Thesis, entitled “Mentoring New Teachers: Strategies, Structures, and Successes,” appeared in Teacher Education Quarterly, Autumn 1993. His article, “Assume the Best for Student Success,” appeared in ASCD’s Classroom Leadership, October 2002.
